Short summary of tournament: Kory Eicher and Dave Smith were gathering up a pile of chips. It looked like Dave and Kory were going to be 1 and 2 at the end of the tournament. The next hand proved different. The flop was a jack of diamonds, queen of hearts, King of spades. The 4th card was a 9 of clubs. and the river was a 7. Dave had a 7 and 9 in his hand to make 2 pair. Kory had the 10 and a 2. I had the straight. Dave raised me 5K. I turn arounded and said all in. Dave called and was taken out of the game because I had more chips. Sad dave left to go to slinky action zone with the kids because only there could he beat anyone at a game. Dave's parting words of wisdom were Kory you better win it all LOSER. So my real competition was out of the game. I sat and played silently while giving away chips to make everyone else feel good about themselves because I knew I had the tournament won. Mike Euker, Mike Miller, Don Shock and Jeff Browell were slowly losing their chips to Tom Baer. Tom Baer got very lucky on beating them on the river. Next to go out was Mike Euker with an all in against tom Baer. I wasn't going to knock Euker out of the game, he is my club bodyguard and he honestly scares me. Jeff Browell took some chips away from Tom on the next hand but it wasn't much. Mike Miller was playing conservative all night long. He said he was not getting the cards. 2 hours into the game, Mike goes all in before the flop. I thought this was a ballsy move due to his low chip stack and being under the gun (which means being to the left of the dealer). Don folded, Jeff folded, but alas lucky Tom Baer called, and I folded. Mike and Tom showed their cards. Mike had 2 jacks and Tom smiled with 2 Kings. Mike was irate and looked like he was going to cry. I felt bad for my cousin once removed. The flop did neither player help and Tom took the pot and eliminated mike from the tournament. Note: earlier in the day, Mike Miller predicted that he would win the tournament later that night. Next to go was Jeff Browell. And after that was Don Shock. Don tried to move into second but I wasn't going to face Tom one on one without being assured 2nd place. I was 2nd highest chip stack at the table. After Tom took Don out, it was a showdown between Master (me) and rookie (tom). The forced bet was 5K per round. I had to bring my A game since Tom was pulling luck on the river. Even lucky guys take out champions once and awhile. Tom wins a hand, kory wins a hand. back and forth this goes for 25 minutes. Tom is still the chip leader. Tom tries to pull a Mike Miller and says let's go all in before the flop. I did not bite on this tactic because I knew he looked at his cards. I knew this was a trap. I said no way and I folded. later did I learn that he had pocket Aces. I had 3 6 off suite. Smart play kory. Mike Euker was the dealer and get the game goiing which was nice since last tournament took 6 hours to finish. I was dealt 3 5 off suit. Tom bets a large amount. I match it. The flop is 6 7 K. I was hoping for no king but o well. Tom bets heavy again. I match to see the fourth card. The fourth is a Q. No help to me but tom could have 3 of a kind or 2 pair. I figured he had at least a pair. Tom says All in. My heart is pumping because I knew if i called I had a 4 out of 52 chance of getting a 4. I needed a 4 and only a 4. I did not pair the board. I went to toss my cards but paused and thought to myself I might as well end it or win it on this hand. I call an get up from the table. Everyone stares when I show my 3 5 off suit. Jeff says wow you got balls. Tom shows that he does have a pair of 7's or 2 pair, i don't remember. Euker lays the 5th or the river as it is known in poker. It is a 4 of hearts. I win. My heart is still racing and im excited that I pulled the 4. Tom goes wait wait let's count out the chips and continue to play. I say Tom but come on that was an awesome hand just take 2nd but he declines and we count out the chips. So I have to play more hands. This continues for another 10 minutes, until Tom says all in and I call with a pair of 7's, tom did not match the board and I win the tournament. I had a great time playing with fellow club members and divers and guests. Everyone had a blast too. This is another perk of being a club member. Well, thank you for reading this blog and I hope to see you at the next meeting or event.
God Bless,
Kory
