If you are a diver with diabetes, a condition that can cause dangerously low blood sugar, you had to hang up the dive gear or keep your condition a secret. Being dishonest, especially in diving, can mean tragic circumstances. However, it got out that many people were diving with diabetes and were doing ok. So in 2005 the Divers Alert Network (DAN) worked with the Hyperbaric Medical Society and reached consensus that people with diabetes can scuba.
Don't take that giant stride just yet. If you have diabetes related conditions then you can not dive. While the study found no adverse effects, people with diabetes should be in good physical shape and on top of their condition. People who have diabetes need to be fit to dive, choose their dive objectives carefully and stay on top of their diabetes.
So if you are a diabetic and want to hit the water, visit your doctor, and check out some guidelines recommended by DAN at www.diversalertnetwork.org and search on diabetes.
